オーケストラ。世界的な名門オーケストラのひとつで1945年創立以来各時代を代表する一流アーティストたちと長期間にわたって良好な関係を築き共演を実現させてきた。新人、ベテランを問わずアーティストを継続的に支援するという同楽団の方針の賜物である。この方針は楽団内部にも応用され楽団員の多くがソロや室内楽の分野でもキャリアを積んでいる。指揮者にはフルトヴェングラー、R.シュトラウス、トスカニーニ、カンテッリ、カラヤン、ジュリーニといった巨匠の薫陶を受け初代の首席指揮者にオットー・クレンペラーを迎えた。その後、ロリン・マゼール准首席指揮者、リッカルド・ムーティ首席指揮者兼音楽監督、ジュゼッペ・シノーポリ音楽監督、チャールズ・マッケラス首席客演指揮者、クルト・ザンデルリング名誉指揮者などが同楽団の主要ポストを経験している。現在はエサ＝ペッカ・サロネン首席指揮者・芸術顧問の他、クリストフ・フォン・ドホナーニ終身名誉指揮者、ウラディーミル・アシュケナージ桂冠指揮者が就任している。
